Objective and Key Results (OKR)

The OKR (Objective and Key Results) feature in EM-OS aligns organization-wide strategies with daily development activities, project progress, and individual growth to maintain active and effective goal management.

1. Core Concept & 3-Tier Alignment

EM-OS structures objectives and their metrics (Key Results) into three hierarchical levels:

🏢 Organization Objective
   └── 👥 Team Objective
          └── 👤 Personal Objective
  • Company-wide Transparency: To promote visibility and transparency, all registered objectives are open and viewable by any user.
  • Goal Alignment: When creating team or personal objectives, users can link them to an upper-level parent objective to illustrate alignment with organization-wide strategies.
  • Automatic Progress Rollup: When a Key Result's progress is updated, the progress of its parent Objective is recalculated automatically, which then propagates recursively to higher-level objectives.

2. Key Result Types

Key Results support two methods of measurement and input:

  1. Manual: Users evaluate their confidence and numbers, updating the current values manually.
  2. Dynamic KR [PRO Plan Only]: Integrates with various data resources inside EM-OS, automatically aggregating and syncing values.

Progress Calculation Logic

Progress percentage is automatically calculated between 0% and 100% based on the "Starting Value", "Target Value", and "Current Value" using one of the following logics:

  • Increase: Used for metrics where values are expected to grow toward the target (e.g., "Complete 10 releases").
  • Decrease: Used for metrics where values should be reduced (e.g., "Reduce unresolved bugs to 5 or fewer").
  • Threshold: A binary metric where reaching the target value gives 100% progress, and anything below gives 0%.

3. Dynamic Key Results (Dynamic KR) [PRO Plan Only]

Dynamic Key Results automatically sync their values on-demand (via the "Sync" button) or via background cron jobs by linking with the following platform resources:

CategoryResourceAggregation / Sync Logic
EngineeringMetricsAggregates the average of development metrics (e.g., deployment frequency) during the cycle.
DeliveryProjectDirectly uses the progress percentage (0-100%) of the specified project.
DeliveryBacklogCounts the completed backlog items or sum of story points within the cycle.
QualityTech DebtCounts the number of technical debt items marked as "Resolved" during the cycle.
QualityPost-MortemComputes the completion rate of action items defined in post-mortems.
QualityBugCounts resolved bug reports assigned to the team during the cycle.
PeopleSurveyComputes the average score of 5-point rating scale questions for a survey.
People1on1Counts the number of "Completed" 1on1 sessions conducted during the cycle.
PeopleTech SkillMeasures the team's technical skill coverage ratio against expectations.
ReliabilitySLODirect sync of the average SLO achievement rate during the cycle.
CostMan-HourRetrieves the percentage of active time spent on a work category from work logs.
CollaborationSlackComputes the total messages and reactions sent in Slack during the cycle.
ProductAnalyticsCounts page actions or unique user counts of a feature from analytics daily summary.
ArchitectureADRCounts the number of technology decisions (ADR) marked as "Accepted" during the cycle.
R&DResearchCounts evaluated R&D themes or technical outputs created.
StrategyRoadmapComputes the completion rate of strategic milestone items on the roadmap.
Skill GrowthIndividual SkillCounts the number of personal skills newly marked as "Achieved" within the cycle.
Commitment1on1 TodoMeasures the completion rate of todo/action items defined in 1on1s.

4. 1on1 Communication Integration

To prevent goals from being forgotten, OKRs are integrated directly into 1on1 sessions.

Confidence Score

While progress values can be automated, the confidence of achieving a goal requires human judgment.

  • Users can review personal OKRs and current progress directly in the "Personal OKR" panel on the 1on1 session screen.
  • Adjust the confidence score (0.0 to 1.0) quickly using a slider.

Auto-Transcription to Notes

Updating the confidence score during a 1on1 session automatically posts a change log directly to the 1on1 Shared Notes:

System Note Example: "Updated confidence score of key result "Project progress" under objective "Accelerate Delivery" from 0.8 to 0.5."

This acts as a conversation starter, allowing managers to instantly spot declining confidence, hear the reasons, and discuss immediate support actions.

5. End-of-Cycle Review & Closeout

At the end of a cycle, follow these steps to review and close out goals:

  1. Final Sync: Perform a final sync on Dynamic KRs to capture the final progress percentage.
  2. Self-Score Input: Enter a final self-score between 0.0 and 1.0 based on the system progress.
  3. Reflection Comment: Write a final reflection comment on achievements, lessons learned, or reasons for miss, and close the objective.

6. Feature Restrictions by Plan (Plan Guard)

Certain OKR capabilities require a PRO plan subscription.
